The protocols used in the GARMIN GPS Interface are arranged in the following three layers:

Protocol Layers

Protocol Layers

Application

(highest)

Link

Physical

(lowest)

The Physical layer is based on RS-232. The Link layer uses packets with minimal overhead. At the Application layer, there are several protocols used to implement data transfers between a Host and a GPS.

The FMI - Fleet Management Interface Protocol. This integrated solution allows fleet tracking, messaging, dispatch and navigation directly to Garmin PNDs. This solution will improve customer response, optimize fleet resources and increase fleet productivity.

Features:

  • Text Message Protocol: Allows you to display text messages sent to the device in the "inbox" of the Garmin device.

  • Stop destination protocol: the control center can send a stop/work list to the Garmin device and the pilot has the ability to navigate directly to stop from the list.

  • Estimated time of arrival: the dispatcher/control centre may request an estimated time of arrival of the current shutdown/work in progress.

  • Automatic Arrival at Stop: This function is used to tell the PND Garmin to automatically detect that it has reached a stop, then to ask the driver if he wants to mark the stop as complete and start navigating to the next stop in the list.

  • Canned messages: Drivers can store up to 120 canned messages, eliminating the need to type while driving.

  • Driver identification: Know who, what, when, where and how of each vehicle in the fleet.

Communication between the Garmin and a vehicle tracker which has the RS-232 port includes the following functions: Please visit the link below to learn more about these fonctions.

Teltonika tracker device can fully support Fleet Management Interface (FMI) versions up to 2.1. Other or higher versions may be supported, but Teltonika is not responsible for the changes made by Garmin, which may affect the function of Teltonika tracker device and Garmin products.
